2021 VW Jetta GLI vs. 2021 Honda Accord

Overview

If you're shopping for a comfortable mid-size sedan for carpooling or transporting your family, two of your top contenders may be the 2021 VW Jetta GLI and the Honda Accord. Both have much in common: the price range, seating for five, and front-wheel drive, just to name a few features. However, many differences prove the Jetta is the superior choice.

Engine

The Accord and Jetta GLI are not far apart when comparing engines. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Accord puts out 192 horsepower. An upgraded 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 252 horsepower is available, but only in the Sport trim. The Jetta GLI uses the same engine as the popular Golf GLI: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 228 horsepower, standard in all trims.

Transmission

The Accord's engine is continuously variable transmission, with paddle shifters only available in the Sport trim. The Jetta GLI offers your choice of a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic. Drivers who enjoy the feeling of control they get from a manual transmission, along with the slightly narrower body and peppy pickup of the Jetta, will appreciate the opportunity to drive a practical sedan with a sporty edge.

Interior Features

Not counting the Accord's hybrid versions, it's available in four trim levels: LX, Sport, Sport Special Edition, and EX-L. Extras, such as heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and a driver's side seat-back pocket, are only available in the Sport and EX-L trims.

The Jetta GLI only has two trim levels: the S and the Autobahn. The S trim includes heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 10-color customizable interior ambient lighting standards. The top-tier Autobahn adds leather seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support.

Technology

In the Accord, you'll find an 8-inch touch screen and infotainment system compatible with Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, but it's only wireless in the Sport and EX-L trims. Also, Honda has included Sirius XM Radio, HD Radio, and a wireless phone charger in the top trims. The Jetta GLI includes a 6.5 or 8-inch touch screen that includes all of the Accord's features plus a Wi-Fi hotspot. The top-tier Accord includes a 10-speaker premium audio system, while in the Jetta's Autobahn trim, you'll enjoy a superior BeatsAudio sound system tailored to true music lovers.

Both of these vehicles are practical and comfortable, but if you also want a sedan that's fun to drive with luxurious touches, the Jetta GLI is worth checking out. Visit DARCARS Volkswagen Fairfax for a test drive today.
