2021 VW Tiguan vs. 2021 Honda CR-V

Overview

There are a lot of compact SUVs to choose from in 2021, but two of the best ones are the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Honda CR-V. They are similarly priced, both have good fuel economy, and both vehicles are comfortable rides. However, the Tiguan's tech and safety features put it in the lead. Read on to find out why you should seriously consider VW's contender.

Engine and Performance

This year's Honda CR-V comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an output of 190 horsepower. VW's Tiguan has a similar engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 184 horsepower — not much difference. However, the CR-V has a continuously variable transmission (CVT) while the Tiguan's transmission is an eight-speed automatic. Many drivers feel more in control and connected with the eight-speed compared to the CVT.

Both vehicles' standard configuration includes front-wheel drive. An all-wheel drive is an option with the CR-V, and the Tiguan offers VW's 4Motion four-wheel-drive system, which provides better control in variable road conditions and on rough terrain.

Interior

One huge advantage of the VW Tiguan is the option of either a five-seat model or a seven-seater. The CR-V is only available with two rows and seating for five. Upgrading the Tiguan from the base S level to the SE trim affords a lot of extras, such as a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette seat covers, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support. Most of the CR-V's interior upgrades are only available on the top EX-L and Touring trims, such as leather-trimmed seats and shift knob.

Technology

Lovers of tech gadgets will definitely prefer the Tiguan. While the CR-V's base display screen is only 5 inches and is not a touch screen, the base-level Tiguan has a 6.5-inch touch screen. As you'd expect, details such as an upgraded audio system, wireless connectivity, and advanced gadgets are added with each trim level. But, as with most other options, similar upgrades are generally available in lower trim levels of the Tiguan than the CR-V's.

Safety Features

Although both vehicles offer an array of safety and driver-assist technology, the Tiguan's package is more comprehensive in lower trim levels. For example, all levels of the Tiguan offer blind-spot monitoring, while you'll need to upgrade to the third trim level of the CR-V for the same.

In summary, unless you're willing to purchase a top-trim, fully-loaded vehicle, you'll find more top-level amenities in the Tiguan, making it a better value. Stop in at DARCARS Volkswagen Fairfax and test drive a Tiguan today!
